‘The Invention of Lying’, You’ll Love it or Hate it
Sat down and watch ‘The Invention of Lying’ last night. I think it was meant to be dubbed as a comedy given that Ricky Gervais wrote and appeared in it. If it was, it was pretty tame from that perspective, but I’ve got to say I thought it has a brilliant sub-plot.
(Minor Spoiler)
A brief synopsis of the film. Gervais is living in a world where no human can lie, he becomes the first person who learns how to lie, and it follows his story from there and how he interacts with the world. It all then turns into a bit of a dig at Jesus, which frankly I loved.
(Spoilers over)
After watching it, I wondered how this went down with the critics. A quick jump onto metacritic reveals reviews swinging from 88% to 20%, obviously this movie is to cinema, what marmite is to toast spreads. I noticed a lot of American publications knock it down on score, either for being too atheist or them not having a clue about the underlying agenda of the movie. The Guardian, gave it 80%. Again I wonder if this is a fair reflection of the movie or them being overly liberal.
Either way, I would recommend just to see if you loved or hated it.
